How do I get a License to Buy Cars at California Auctions?

California Dealer License

California offers two main types of dealer licenses:

1. New car dealers
2. Used car dealers (wholesale)

To get a license, you have to be at least 18-years-old, have a permanent business location that complies with zoning regulations, proof of identity and residency, and have a surety bond.

California requires dealer applicants to complete a dealer education program. Approved providers can be found here. The program covers essential aspects of dealership operations, including state laws and regulations.

The DMV will inspect your dealership before issuing a license. You’ll have to pass and register as a business entity. 🚗

After your license application is approved, you'll have to attend a dealer orientation to learn about your responsibilities and obligations as a dealer.

Dealers are required to maintain specific insurance coverage, including a liability insurance policy that meets the minimum requirements set by the DMV.
