Capital City Auto Auction Reviews the Mitsubishi Outlander
A Review of the Mitsubishi Outlander
The Mitsubishi Outlander has been a serious, though smaller, contender in the SUV space.
Opinions of Outlanders are divided; if you’ve never had a problem, it’s a symphony of engineering and design. If you’ve had problems… well π¬
If you’re a consumer, you’ll find this useful, if you’re a dealer then you can bid at auction here in Rancho Cordova, and a Mitsubishi Outlander may be worth it! Let’s review:
- The best Mitsubishi Outlander years
- The features and pros
- The Problems
- And the all important Outlander Price! ππ«
ποΈ The Best Mitsubishi Outlander Years:
The Mitsubishi Outlander goes back twenty years to the first gen in 2003. Back then, a burgeoning crossover SUV trend compelled the carmaker to enter the ring with the Outlander/Airtrek.
Of course, we’re all about used cars at Capital City Auto Auctions. While Mitsubishi might not be as popular as other Japanese makers like Honda or Toyota, tens of thousands of searches on Google each month for “mitsubishi outlander” proves it.
Look out for the 2005 and 2006 models. Both of these received very few complaints.
CoPilot recommends a well maintained 2003 Outlander. That’s the key; well-maintained. When you are browsing our inventory, note the condition, as we try to list as much as possible.
Despite faulty A/C systems and problems starting, many people put well over 100k on 2003 models, and they will be the cheapest model you can find.
Jumping ahead to the reliable 2012 and 2013 Mitsubishi Outlanders; with just 32 NHTSA complaints and five recalls on the 2013 model, it provides a good balance of modernity and value, especially considering its three-row seating, best suited for smaller occupants. π§ πΈ
The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) stands out from the Outlander lineup, as it offers eco-friendly plug-in hybrid power.

π Mitsubishi Outlander Features
π All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Capability:
The Mitsubishi Outlander lineup, including the ES AWC (All-Wheel Control) model, prides itself on its AWD capability. If you love superior traction and stability, especially when navigating various road conditions, the Outlander has you covered.
The Outlander's AWC ensures confident handling no matter what, and that’s important, especially up the trails, or in the rain! βοΈ
π Spacious Interior:
Outlanders have thoughtfully designed cabins. There’s ample space for both passengers and cargo. Consider the Mitsubishi Outlander SE, which boasts an even roomier interior.
π‘οΈ Advanced Safety Technology:
Mitsubishi Outlanders have evolved in safety technology. Newer models like the 2022 Outlander feature advanced safety tech, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.
Even 10+ year-old Outlander models offer standard safety features like stability control, multiple airbags, and antilock brakes, ensuring basic protection.
πͺ Flexible Seating Arrangements:
In the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander and its modern counterparts, advanced seating configurations provide effortless adjustments and enhanced cargo space. With features like flexible second-row and reclining rear seats, these versions prioritize comfort and adaptability. For those who want it, the Mitsubishi Outlander GT offers versatile third-row seating.
Even in earlier editions like the 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander, a strong commitment to practicality and convenience shines through. π§³
π£οΈ Ground Clearance:
The Mitsubishi Outlander typically boasts a ground clearance ranging from 7.3 to 8.1 inches, varying by trim level and model year. Ground clearance is a pivotal factor affecting the Outlander's versatility in handling diverse road conditions, whether on or off-road.
For those considering a hybrid suitable for various terrains, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT offers 7.3 inches of ground clearance, allowing you to tackle rough terrains, deep snow (ski trip in Lake Tahoe anyone?), and off-road trails while maintaining an eco-friendly footprint.
π₯ Efficient Powertrains:
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is known for its fuel-efficient powertrains, with options like the 2.0L MIVEC and 2.4L MIVEC engines, ensuring both fuel savings and reliable performance.
Older models, like the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander, feature efficient four-cylinder engines for commendable fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. Mitsubishi's dedication to cutting-edge automotive technology provides choices for a variety of preferences and requirements.
π Used Mitsubishi Outlander Problems β οΈ
We caution anyone considering the 2014, 2015, 2016, or 2018 models. Consult a mechanic, unless you are a mechanic, then, you know… talk to yourself. π π§
There are plenty of interior accessory problems with these models, as well as premature brake wear, paint chipping, transmission failure, wheel problems, and electrical issues.
Outlanders can, if maintained well and driven well, last a long time. Engine Patrol puts them at 13–17 years when driving an average of 15,000 years annually. The Driver Adviser says, on average, Outlanders can reach over 200,000 miles before repairs aren't worth it.
There are exceptions out there, like those 20-year-old Outlanders with another few years left on them, we see hit our dealers’ auction lot from time to time. But your sweet spot might be the 2012–2013 models mentioned earlier.
π΅ Mitsubishi Outlander Price
Glad you made it this far because now’s the time for us to save how much a dealer can save at Capital City Auto Auction! Maybe everybody says that, but we have the proof!
In the past 6 months, the average sale price for a used Mitsubishi Outlander at Capital City was $1,100. I dare you to beat that. π
Hit up Carfax. A used Mitsubishi Outlander with 100,000 miles is what… $10,000? Maybe $9,000? At Capital Auto Auction, how about a 2012 Outlander with 100k miles for $1,000! Sure, it needs work, but even if you sink three grand into it, you’re still saving a ton! And 2012 was a good Outlander year.
All it takes is some savvy bidding. Learn more about getting started.
